MEET THE ARCHITECT
David Watkin - M.Arch, AAA, AIBC, MAA & RAIC
As a child, David spent a great deal of time assisting his father on site with his carpentry practice. From this he developed a passion for design and building which had initially directed him to study engineering. Shortly thereafter, his interested shifted and found architecture to be a much more gratifying vocation. David began his studies by enrolling in the RAIC Syllabus program via the Nova Scotia Technical College in 1966, later transferring to Calgary to continue his education at the University of Calgary where he then completed his studies in 1979. By 1980, David had become a certified member of the RAIC and AAA. Over the next few decades he obtained certification in all provinces and territories allowing him to build all across Canada, and with some projects bringing him to the USA and UK.
Opening his practice, David Watkin Architect, in 1979, David has remained the primary Architect, Project Manager and Designer. Throughout his career, David has designed a variety of buildings ranging from large to small scale, residential, commercial, and public. Most recently, his focus has been on the development of senior’s housing, care facilities, and dementia units.
Outside the office, David had spent a considerable amount of time donating his expertise to missionary efforts across the world. He has designed, built, and funded many care facilities and orphanages in Thailand and Cambodia, as well as birthing hospitals in Uganda, Sudan, and Ethiopia and has aided in the drilling of wells and establishment of solar grids to provide water and power to remote communities.
